Bedroom bomb kept for 40 years
28/08/2008
A local bomb disposal team was called into action after a man demanded their services to defuse a 40-year-old bomb that was only inches away from his bed.
The Mirror reported that the Gloucester man, who was not named, had kept a device originating from the First World War, but recently decided that the brass-coloured explosive "may not be safe", triggering a quick response unit to turn up to his home.
He informed the police that the heirloom had been in the family for many years, and something which "he had played with as a child".
The mayor of Gloucester, Norman Ravenhill, said: "I''m thankful no one was hurt and that the situation was dealt with promptly by all involved."
Neighbours of the bomb owner were evacuated from their homes for their own safety.
Another bomb disposal unit was called to Tangmere Aviation Museum last week after a First World War shell was found thrown underneath a display plane.
